Pantone recently announced its colors of the year for 2021. Yes, this year we have the pleasure of two colors of the year: Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Grey. For this post, I will focus on the yellow.
The color “Illuminating” is one of strength and positivity. Pantone chose this color as it is a ‘story of color that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly.’ Our world needs this bit of sunshine and friendliness at this exact time, and what better way to express these feelings at your event or activation than with flowers?
According to Pantone, “Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.” The image below is a great example of a brand (in this case, Pandora) using flowers in their event activation. Who wouldn't want to be a part of this experience...just to be close to it in all its sunshine-y radiance!
As humans look for ways to lift themselves with positivity, energy, and hope to offset the feelings of uncertainty, cheerful shades of yellow can help bring us this comfort we are so intensely craving right now. Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow, reminding us of sunshine.
If using all yellow flowers seems a bit too much yellow for you, consider tempering the brightness by pairing the yellow with other hues, such as creams or pale greens...as in this photo by Party Rental Ltd.
Some of my favorite yellow flowers that are also great for installations and events are:
Roses (of course, because I am from Texas)
Narcissus
Gloriosa Lillies
Forsythia Branches
Tulips
Orchids
Sunflowers
Yellow (like every color) has a specific impact on our mood and emotions, so the next time your feel yourself in need of a little pick-me-up, treat yourself to that bunch of yellow tulips at your grocery store. You’ll be glad you did!
